The old, beautifully restored farmhouse stands strikingly on a picturesque hill in the Montalcino area. From here you can let your gaze wander for a long time over the vastness of Tuscany. Francesco Leanza's wines are a reflection of this region: gentle monuments full of depth and finesse, reflecting the winemaker's dedication and passion for the Sangiovese grape and wine. His wines invite you to linger and indulge. They are an authentic reflection of the wonderful terroir on which they were created.
Francesco grows his organically certified wines on just 4 hectares. Its four vineyards are protected from the cold northern winds thanks to their ideal south or south-southwest orientation. The clayey-sandy skeletal soils offer ideal conditions for the Sangiovese grape, which is mainly grown on the winery. The barren, chalky southern locations give the wines their typical tannic structure and give them their typical minerality. For his Dopoteatro, Francesco cultivates Cabernet Sauvignon and a homeopathic amount of Canaiolo.
The spontaneous fermentation of the grapes takes place in stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 15 to 80 hl, which are located in the newly built, semi-underground fermentation cellar. Francesco makes his wines in tonneaux made from French oak (5 hl) and in barrels made from French and Slovenian oak. As the wines mature, they are poured into larger and larger barrels.
It was also the deep connection to Brunello wines that led Francesco to found the sangiovese per amico association together with Jan Hendrik Erbach from Pian Dell'Orino and Stella di Campalto. They want to set an example and demand a “purity law” for Brunello – 100% Sangiovese grosso and nothing else and thus a true vote of confidence in the great grape from this unique region!
