The South Tyrolean winemaker Caroline Pobitzer and her German husband, the oenologist Jan Hendrik Erbach, have settled on this venerable terroir in the immediate vicinity of Biondi-Santi. Finds of fossil remains, fossilized shells and extensive lime deposits testify to a geological origin that was characterized by periodic maritime floods and longer dry phases.

Millions of years later, these soils form ideal conditions for the Sangiovese grape to produce complex, finesse-rich wines full of depth. The four vineyards in different locations require very individual work in the vineyards and later also during vinification. Jan, who, as an experienced oenologist, advises many wineries in Montalcino, regularly manages to conjure up the full diversity of the terroir in his wines from his 6 hectares of vineyards with the precision of a Swiss clockwork.

The freshness of his wines never ceases to delight. You won't find any reductive notes like those found in many other producers in this region in the wines of Pian Dell'Orino. We were particularly impressed by this new style, as it shows a completely new potential of the Sangiovese grosso grape. Juicy, full-bodied wines full of melt and delicate tannins are the trademark of these unique wines from one of Italy's great regions.
