If the term Brett appears in wine, it is usually a wine error; Brett is the abbreviation of Brettanomyces, the yeast that causes the smell of horse stables and wet fur in wine. However, the Bret Brothers have nothing to do with any of this. They are the owners of the Domaine de la Soufrandière and founded a négociant trade in 2001, in which, in addition to selecting wines from their own vineyards, they also offer wines made from purchased grapes. In terms of quality, they are on the same level, which is because the grapes come exclusively from old organic vines certified by Ecocert and are harvested manually. In the cellar they are aged in the same way as the domaine's grapes, i.e. with spontaneous fermentation and the use of seven to 20 year old barrels. Wines from the Mâconnais and increasingly from the neighboring Beaujolais are on offer.

Since the young generation took over the domaine, founded in 1947 by their paternal grandfather, in 2000, the winery has been going steeply and steadily uphill. The multitude of hymns of praise from the international wine trade press impressively confirms this development. Immediately after starting, the young Bretauf brothers switched to organic and biodynamic farming and have been certified organic since 2006. They were recently able to take over five hectares of vineyards in various locations, all of which were already certified organic. Jean-Guillaume and Jean Philipe Bret are constantly on the ball, always present in the vineyard and leaving nothing to chance. Their wines are therefore characterized by absolute reliability at the highest level. All wines undergo malolactic fermentation and are very mineral and precise.

Bret Brothers

Just one year after taking over the family winery “La Soufrandière”, the Bret brothers started their second project “Bret Brothers”.

With the aim of being able to offer a wide range of selected terroir wines from southern Burgundy, they buy grapes from friendly winegrowers with small micro plots and the highest possible vine age, who work according to the same strict quality guidelines as the brothers in their own vineyards. The wines are prepared with the same passion and care as those of “La Soufrandiere” and are harvested by hand by our own team and then aged on natural yeasts in our own cellar.

The Maconnais
In southern Burgundy, the Mâconnais, with its 5,400 hectares, has a variety of different microclimates and soils. The “Bret Brothers” line includes more than 20 cuvées from the Mâcon, Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Loché appellations and, since 2013, Beaujolais. Vinaturel only sells organic-certified wines from the Bret Brother collection.

expansion
The wines are all consistently made using the same method in order to give each wine the opportunity to optimally express its terroir. That's why all wines are harvested by hand, followed by whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous fermentation with our own yeasts. There is no chaptalization or acidification, the aging takes place in traditional 6-18 year old barrels using extremely little sulfur. The wines mature in wood for 11 or 17 months (depending on the cuvée), they all go through malolactic fermentation and are sealed exclusively with cork that has not been treated with peroxide.
